Solstice Cooking

Got this invite -

Hello Friends,

This Friday the 21st of  December is the Solstice and the end of the
Great Cycle in the Mayan Calendar which was used by most pre-Columbian
Central American cultures.

We would like to mark this time with a ritual to celebrate the
elements, our earth, and all living beings.

We will honor the water with songs, offerings, and gratitude.
Following Native American tradition we will make a ritual to the tree
people  for all of human kind.
Following in the Mayan tradition we will build a fire out of beauty
with the intention of transformation.

This is a gathering of relationship.
Relationship to our earth.
Relationship to the living elements.
Relationship to our human family.
Relationship to our self.

The ritual will happen in three parts: Water, Tree/earth, and Fire.
We are aiming to build the fire in the light and move into darkness
with the light.

What to bring; Any combination of these things: coco nuts, honey,
chocolate, grounded coffee, dried herbs, fresh flowers, candle sticks,
corn meal, tobacco.
Please everyone bring at least one candle stick. A warm blanket or
coat and flash light. You are also welcome to bring a song, prayer, poem,

or heart offering to the fire.

We look forward to gathering together.

Now does that sound like fun or WHAT?!? Rituals and fire? I'm in!!

So I decided to take corn meal in the form of COOKIES!! because I found a recipe for it. But it asks for baking powder and if you read my previous posts you know that I can't find any baking powder. So I decided to ask the worldwide web.

What will happen if I use baking soda instead of baking powder in my cookies?

You will need to use some kind of acid to make it rise properly. For example, if the recipe calls for milk, use buttermilk instead. If you don't have any buttermilk on hand, you can make the equivalent with 1 cup milk plus 1 tablespoon vinegar. Mix it together, then add it to the mix. The vinegar (or the buttermilk) works together with the baking soda to do the same thing as the baking powder would on its own. I do it all the time!

So it's a go then! Because I have baking soda and vinegar on hand. Plus I have all that oven experience after making those Mango Cookies last night. Click here for the link to the Cornmeal Cookie Recipe! PS I added some strawberry jam in the middle. Aren't they festive looking?

Cooking them on a tilt seems to be working out just fine!

And I think I'll also take some coco nuts. In what form? Fudge! New recipe using only three ingredients - coconut oil, cocoa, honey. Then sprinkled with coconut. Check it out here.

And Hannah has a pot of apple cider bubbling on the stove. Here's her recipe.  Now if it will only quit raining and blowing out there! On the bright side, the inclement weather enabled me to do lots of blogging today!

Cool shirt for a girl from an Alaskan fishing village!

 Looks about ready!
