Las Aves y Los Plátanos (Birds & Bananas)

We have discovered Costa Rica's version of the Magpie - it's the Brown Jay. They are squawking outside our bedroom window at sunrise which comes early here! And we are having ownership issues with this bunch of bananas. This is the only bunch on our property at the rental. I know there are tons more out there. I've seen them! And the Brown Jays can even fly cross country to find them. So I really want them to leave these bananas alone as I'm planning banana cream pie and banana bread. Can you see this one perched right above the bananas?
And in the picture below he is changing his tactics and hanging below the bunch.
I got tired of standing guard and the owners stopped by with their machete and this is the result. They said to leave it in the entryway and it should ripen in a couple weeks. They guaranteed it wasn't full of spiders hiding among the bananas. It was suggested we leave it outside to drip sap for a while because the sap stains clothes.
And that white spot near the bottom of the picture is the stump of the banana tree. Once you get your one bunch, it's all over. Chop the tree down and throw it away. There won't be any more bananas coming.
And this is it. The dead banana tree. I'm going to look up some recipes for green bananas.
